Glandular fever symptoms

Dr Morton’s GP – Dr Natalie Atere-Roberts discusses glandular fever: types of symptoms; what these likely mean and possible treatments.

Glandular fever is an infection that is caused by the Epstein Barr virus, a kind of herpes. Glandular fever symptoms are typically a combination of high swinging fever, swollen glands in the neck, sore throat, tiredness, muscle aches and pain on turning and sensitive pain in the abdomen, as the liver can become inflamed in some cases. It is infectious and has been dubbed “the kissing disease” and it often occurs in teenagers! It can be hard to distinguish from bacterial tonsillitis so doctors often prescribe antibiotics, however these will not help your symptoms.

The treatment for glandular fever is to drink lots of water, to rest and to take ibuprofen and paracetamol.
Most people recover from glandular fever in two to three weeks, but it’s common to feel tired for a few weeks afterwards.

Dengue is a viral infection that spreads through the Aedes mosquito. These mosquitoes typically lay eggs near standing water in containers that hold water, like buckets, bowls, animal dishes, flower pots, and vases. Mosquitoes that spread dengue, chikungunya, and Zika bite during the day and night. Mosquitoes become infected when they bite a person infected with the virus. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to other people through bites.

Swimmer’s shoulder is one of those broad terms similar to runner’s knee. Broadly speaking it’s a pain around the shoulder brought on by swimming.

As triathletes we don’t do as many miles in the pool as swimmers but we still need to look after our shoulders.

Your shoulders do a lot of the work in swimming. They have a large range of movement and are put under significant force repetitively for every stroke of front crawl.

Therefore it’s no surprise that problems in the shoulder area are the most common injuries for swimmers.

Heather will be covering the cause of swimmer’s shoulder and more importantly how to solve and ultimately prevent it.
